Birth of Don Benito Juárez Anniversary - March 21st

These festivities are Guelatao's most important event. The celebration takes place each year on March 21, birthday of Benito Juárez, during six consecutive days. The event begins with a civil-military celebration, that the President of Mexico and the State Governor attend. After this, the celebrations continue with the presentation of cultural events. The most outstanding of these are the regional folklore dance shows from each community found in Sierra Juárez: Villa Alta, Yalalag, Ixtlan, Comaltepec, Macuiltianguis, San Juan Luvina, San Juan Atepec, San Miguel Abejones, and others. Sporting events, such as basketball tournaments, biking contests, and athletic competitions are also organised. Fireworks and popular dances are also held.

The religious festivities taking place in Guelatao are dedicated to St. Paul. These event starts on January 25 and last another five days. There are several activities such as events organised by the parish clerk, calends, reunions, fireworks displays, folklore dances, basketball tournaments, and popular dances.

• Guelatao de Juárez: Is located 34 miles (55 kilometres) North of the City of Oaxaca via highway 190 to the Isthmus. When you reach the Juárez monument, turn left at the detour to continue on highway 175. Approximate travel time: [1:15]
